Prostate Cancer Awareness

What symptoms should I be looking for when it comes to prostate health?

There are a few different conditions we want to rule in or out when it comes to prostate health:

Prostatitis

This is inflammation of the prostate gland. Usually caused by bacteria and typically occurs in men under the age of 35. Symptoms include urgency, frequency and pain during urination; and potential systemic symptoms such as fever, fatigue, low back pain. Usually treated with antibiotics or anti-microbial supplements.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

An enlargement of the prostate gland that usually starts in men over the age of 50 often due to changes in hormones. Symptoms include frequent waking at night to urinate; weak urine flow; problems starting or stopping urine flow. Naturopathic doctors use nutritional supplementation to help shrink the prostate and decrease urinary symptoms.

Prostate Cancer

Can be completely asymptomatic or can have similar symptoms to BPH; if progresses then might have more back or pelvic pain, swelling in the lower extremities, loss of anal sphincter tone and weight loss.

What kind of support can Naturopathic Doctors at Choice Nutrition offer to people affected with Prostate Cancer?

Naturopathic Doctors can help support someone through their cancer journey. This can include providing support before and after surgery and helping to reduce some of the side effects that come related to chemotherapy and radiation treatment. One of the biggest supportive measures Naturopathic Doctors provide is nutritional support, by looking over a dietary journal to ensure proper vitamin and mineral support, maintaining healthy fat and protein intake and weaning out the pro-inflammatory foods. Other supportive measures we offer at Choice Nutrition include: Acupuncture, Bemer Therapy (a pulse electromagnetic field mat to increase microcirculation), Intravenous nutrient therapy and sweat detoxification through sauna and hyperthermia.

What kind of prostate testing should I be looking at getting done?

The 2 most common test are the PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test as well as the DRE (digital rectal exam). A DRE is a physical exam trying to feel for abnormalities in the prostate; however not all the tissue can be felt. In addition, doctors perform the PSA test helps to differentiate between benign prostatic hyperplasia and cancer but there can be a gray area when the levels are elevated and a biopsy is still suggested. If you have a family history of prostate cancer or develop new symptoms talk to your doctor about getting tested, as you do not have to necessarily wait until age 55. If your test comes back abnormal, additional blood work and testing can be done to help determine levels of
inflammation in the body.

At Choice Nutrition we accept all stages of and all types of cancer and recommend and provide additional testing to optimize your healing process.

WE DO NOT ACCEPT ILLNESS – and neither should you.

Yours in health, Dr. Joanne Dawe, N.D.
