Description
Essential fatty acids, such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are not synthesized naturally by the body and must be obtained from the diet to prevent deficiency. The World Health Organization recommends that 6–11% of daily energy expenditure comes from polyunsaturated fatty acids, and that daily intake in therapeutic ranges of EPA and DHA derived from fish oil is necessary for the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. Several research studies have shown that adequate daily intake of EPA and DHA can improve blood lipid levels and reduce complications associated with coronary heart disease. EPA and DHA intake has been shown to markedly reduce inflammation and has demonstrated positive effects in modulating the immune system for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
