April 25-27th, 2025
Course is held IN PERSON at our Saskatoon location
INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Allison Fillatre, B.Sc., N.D.
COST: $900 + applicable taxes
This course is taught with the intent to provide healthcare providers with the proper guidelines for safe and effective administration of intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SubQ) and intradermal (ID) injections. By the end of the course, participants should feel comfortable and confident in administration of intravenous therapy and other types of injections as well as how to set up a fully functional intravenous suite.
This course offers practical training with the addition of audio and visual presentations. The course will be carried out in a lecture-style format consisting of course material and practicum break-out sessions in which practice will take place on simulation mannequin arms and hands as well as artificial tissue pads that simulate muscle, subcutaneous, and intradermal tissue, arteries and veins. Students will gain confidence in their injection and intravenous access skills on mannequins before attempting access on their partners. There will be opportunity for questions to be answered during practical break out sessions.
Participants will be provided with a high-resolution color training manual of their lecture notes from the visual presentations. Participants are required to bring a calculator for Osmolarity and drip rate calculations as well as pens, paper, and highlighters to note important sections in their training manuals. It is recommended to come dressed in layers and dressed comfortable enough to be able to allow access to areas like the arms, legs, and shoulders for practical break out sessions. The practical training will include the safe and proper preparation and administration of intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SubQ) and intradermal (ID) injections. Practical sessions will also include the successful preparation, insertion, and discontinuation of at different types of angiocatheters (butterfly needles, standard angiocatheters, as well as advanced safety bloodless design catheters).
All participants are broken up into groups of 2 or 3 per group. Course lectures and practical sessions are carried out in an intravenous therapy suite, fully equipped with access to emergency crash carts, oxygen tanks with regulators, emergency medicines, needles, syringes, ampules, intravenous bags and carrier solutions, first aid stations, as well as phlebotomy and intravenous access stations. The goal is for the healthcare provider to see what an intravenous therapy suite looks like in terms of setup and flow. Participants, by the end of the course, should feel comfortable and confident with preparation and administration of intravenous and injectable substances as well as sterile technique compounding and use of ISO Class-5 laminar air flow hoods following standard USP 797 guidelines.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is taught with the intent to provide healthcare providers with the proper guidelines for safe and effective administration of emergency medicines in acute care scenarios. The goal is for the healthcare provider to witness the role play of the worst case scenarios in an IV and injection setting and to be able to, by the end of the course, feel comfortable and confident with their emergency diagnosis and differential diagnosis skills and proper treatment and follow-up management of all acute emergency scenarios that could arise from the administration of intravenous and injectable substances.
By the end of the course, participants should feel comfortable and confident in dealing with complications that could arise from intravenous and injection therapy as well as how to recognize and take control of acute emergency scenarios and how to bridge the gap between when an emergency starts and when emergency medical services arrive on the scene. This course offers visual observation of practical training scenarios with the addition of audio and visual presentations which can be done in an online format at the participants own pace, with opportunity to save progress as you go. Each section will have skill testing questions and there will be an online examination format for final evaluation of skills taught throughout the online course.
The course will be carried out in a online pre-recorded lecture-style format utilizing powerpoint presentations which consist of course material and visual observation of practicum breakout sessions. Participants will be provided with electronic versions of the lecture notes and training manuals. The practical training sessions are pre-recorded for visual observation to get a better understanding of the mock scenarios to demonstrate the safe and proper administration of emergency medicines and the diagnosis and proper management of all acute scenarios that could arise in an intravenous or injection therapy setting. Training will also include the proper use of automated external defibrillators (AED’s) and review of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Course lectures, examinations, course materials and practical sessions are carried out in a virtual environment and some sections are pre-recorded. The pre-recordings take place in an intravenous therapy suite, fully equipped with access to emergency crash carts, oxygen tanks with regulators, emergency medicines, needles, syringes, ampules, intravenous bags and carrier solutions, first aid stations, as well as AED’s and intravenous access stations.
